I am thinking about my business constantly, reading voraciously, and seeking info wherever I can. Between the ages of 28 and 34, was a dark time for me. I suffered with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and my symptoms grew worse and worse until they took over my life. My doctors had no idea how to help me. They gave me bad news and even worse advice.
They said IBS was incurable and, with a straight face, asked me to reduce stress! I never felt so freaked out or abandoned.
For a while I did nothing. I was confused, overwhelmed and angry. Then I researched, Googled, and experimented with alternative therapies. I tried homeopathy, acupuncture and strict diets but my symptoms (bloating, gas, gut pain and constipation) continued.
It took years of obsessive persistence to give myself the self-health education I needed to fix my gut issues permanently. I’ve been symptom free for almost 8 years and have helped friends, coworkers and even strangers improve their digestive issues for free. It brings me great joy to help people heal, so I know I’m in the right business.
Gathering the confidence to turn my healing intuition, passion and expertise into a business took a few years, but finally, four months ago, Do It Yourself Health (www.diyhealthblog.com) was born.

I see myself as the poop queen, starting a shame-free conversation about going to the bathroom. I also want to start a movement (not just a bowel movement) that empowers people to heal themselves with nutrition. There are too many people suffering needlessly because they’ve gotten bad information about IBS. I want to create hope, show that there IS a solution, and provide the tools and support they need.

I want to be known as a mentor who helps women overcome stress, release anxiety, break self-defeating mental patterns, and help them find out who they are. I want people to take less medication and find more joy and present moment awareness in their lives. I want them to believe in the incredible capacity of the human body to heal itself. I want people to become better human beings, more connected, compassionate, and caring.

But I put my heart into it and I am so proud of my labour of love. My website has reached many women so far and I am amazed by the amount of suffering that exists. I would like to be know for helping main stream people get alternative medicine, specificity the human energy system. This would put the power of healing and health in everyone’s reach and hands. Knowing how your energy body works can change your world in a way that you can’t even imagine. I want to be known for redefining wellness. Without community healing, there is no meaningful personal wellness. Without creative expression, healing is only half-cooked.
Here’s how healing and creativity are linked. We each experience wounding, whether it takes the form of physical illness, emotional pain, or soul-deep wounds passed down from our ancestors. I teach that those wounds live right next to our deepest creative power. If we heal a little, we open up more of our gifts to share with the world. And as we give our gifts, that wound opens up a little more. Healing is a cyclical process more like tending a garden or nurturing a friendship than crossing a finish line.
Shenee, I’ve been watching you all through B-School and I’m so impressed with the heart & quality of your work. I need your help to include the theater work that’s so central to my life’s work in my brand. I’ve utterly failed at this so far. A few months ago I took that part of my site down because people told me that it “didn’t fit.” Yet, when I’m in the room with people from all walks of life making meaning together through theater, I *know* this is the missing piece. Theater is communal, and it’s only by working together in community that we can heal the cultural wounds of hatred, suspicion, and trauma that haunt us. We’re all connected, and none of us can be truly well when our communities are suffering. The one-on-one work I do is profound, but it’s limited. Unless I’m catalyzing community & cultural healing, I’m only fulfilling a fraction of my mission.
I plan to use my brand to heal communities and individuals by giving them the tools to access their deep creative selves and bringing back the lost knowledge of healing foods and herbs to the masses. Theater and herbal medicine changed my life and have been the tools that have brought me back from suicidal depression and life-threatening bouts with autoimmune diseases. This stuff works. I’ve seen it work with the immigrant youth I worked with in North Carolina, the pregnant teens in foster care & the homeless activists I worked with in NYC, and hundreds of one-on-one clients over the past 7 years. Here’s why I need HBA right NOW: I am finally launching an idea that I’ve been playing with for about a year now — my own nanny agency. I’ve worked in the Atlanta-area as a babysitter and nanny for more than 10 years, both with and without agencies, and I’ve seen the pluses and minuses. I have SO many ideas that I know, for a fact, will help both families and nannies in the area, but I’m a little overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done. Not only with the business side of things, but everything else as well! I need some direction!
Most agencies are extremely over-priced, have very low standards for babysitters and nannies, and don’t do any sort of follow up with either the family or the nanny. That, and it’s really hard to meet other nannies and set up play-groups, etc in Atlanta because it’s so spread out. I’m planning on bringing all that, and more, together.
My business will be known for being positive, upbeat, unique, creative, supportive and, most of all, INTERACTIVE. We consider our nannies and families part of our OWN family, and we want to make sure everyone is happy!
But again, in order to do all this, I need some serious direction. I’ve never done anything quite like this before. I have my partner to help with the business licensing and stuff like that (he went to business school!) and I know the nanny business well, but the actual branding/launching stuff? No clue! HELP!

I’ve been freelancing on and off for the past few years to supplement my income, but the business had grown stagnant. I’ve stopped clients and as I’ve grown more experienced, I’m realizing I’m not attracting or retaining the ones I want or the projects I want. I want to be known for mentoring women and girls to remember the invisible sun within them. I believe in the strength of connection for women and girls — that we, quite literally, find ourselves through connection with one another. I want to create that connection for women and girls. I believe from a very early age, girls in our society are acculturated to quiet their inner voices, and look outside of themselves for whom they are supposed to be and what they are supposed to do in life. I want to be known for changing the way we talk about beauty and art.
Art is a necessity.
Beauty is essential.
Experiencing the flow of beauty and expressing that through the act of making art is our birthright. This kind of fulfillment belongs to each of us as much as our own senses do, as much as our hands and hearts.
I am an artist today, but I spent many years working in costume jewelry in NYC. Main thing I learned in all that time was how to work for someone else. Be a good employee. When I struck out on my own, I had no idea how to run my own show. I can see now it’s not just about making the best work that you can, it’s also about creating a genuine connection with the people you want to serve. Didn’t pick up that skill set slinging beads in the garment district! That’s where you come in (hopefully) Miss Lady Shenee. I know you have the seed of the nugget of the acorn that I need to plant and nurture in order to grow my business after all this wandering in the dark. I’ve spent 3 years blogging and knocking on all kinds of doors with little to show for it. I know I have to change things and get my game up, and you’ve got the special sauce that could help me out!
I’ve finally realized I’ve been following beauty over money and career my whole life with out even knowing it. I’ve been starting to think about what would happen if I partnered with beauty purposefully. Defining it for myself. And what if I could create a system or pathway which could help others make their own definition of beauty?
Learn how to make it work for themselves. Strap on their own beauty jet pack and take off!
I’m not there yet, but I can feel a lot of juice in the prospect of helping people in this way.

I’ve always been the background chick, the wing woman, the behind-the-scenes girl. I don’t mind others taking the glory if I’ve done some, or sometimes all, of the work. I’m fine with knowing I’ve done my best. And because of it, someone or something is better.
I want to be known as someone who made everything and everyone she touched better. I want to help people to connect to what they need, to say what they need to say, to make their communities and the world more awesome. And I believe I can do that with words. In short…
I want to use what I’ve got to help others get theirs.
I need HBA right now so I can help others get theirs. I know there are people out there who have a purpose, but no prose. A vision, but no voice. That’s where I come in—these folks and I just need to find each other.
I’ve spent many a restless night trying to figure out what I, this background chick, had to offer. When I began to explore the world of professional writing and study other writers, I would often get discouraged because although I was a good writer, I didn’t feel like I had anything interesting to say. But in a lecture last year, I heard something that would change my life forever. A speechwriter recounted his own struggle to find his voice as a writer. And among many wisdom snacks he shared, one in particular resonated with me:
“I realized that I didn’t have to have a voice to be successful as a writer. I could be the voice of others.”
And so my pursuit of writing happiness as ghostwriter began.
Now that I know what I can do, I need the confidence to own it. I know that HBA will do that for me. I want a brand that is confident and authentic, and compels others to allow me to help them to put what they’ve got into words.
My brand will change the world because it will be about more than just me.
Together, my new clients and I will rock the world with new businesses, nonprofits, and other creative ventures. They’ll talk, and people will listen. Because I’ve helped them to articulate themselves in a unique way.
And I’ll be able to do that because Shenee helped me.

I want to create a movement to Reinvent Love, to redefine the word love and what it means. As women many of us grow up thinking that we need to find Prince Charming; that we need to have kids; that we need to do so many things to be “complete”, to be loved. Reinvent Love is about choosing yourself, falling in love with yourself every morning and becoming your own Prince Charming (you want flowers—you buy yourself flowers, you want a hug, you give yourself a hug). When you remember to love yourself unconditionally, miracles happen. My mission is to practice this every moment of my life and to get other women to join the Reinvent Love movement!
I need Hot Brand Action now because I am not a writer—English is not my first language and writing scares me a little…. (ok major confession here!). Also, I know very well in my heart what I want to do and what I am doing—it’s so hard for me to put it into words… my elevator speech sounds so choppy. I haven’t yet launched my site because I am afraid my writing sucks, I am worried I am not connecting with my reader and I want it to be beautiful and it’s not, it’s ok but not as gorgeous as it could be.
I plan to change the world by empowering women, specifically women that are heartbroken to love themselves and chose themselves as Magnificent Beings. I believe that once you love yourself unconditionally and feel complete as you are, you start having better relationships with others and the world become a better place.

For my scholarship entry I decided to record a video. My first video EVER. Boy was that an adventure.
I got all dressed up & made up, set up my computer to be at the right height & position, downloaded a video recording program, and started recording only to find out my computer has no microphone! Which is weird because it’s got a built in webcam.
So I dug out my ancient ibook & old webcam. One way or another I was going to make this video. I happily discovered that my old webcam had a built in mic and I could use it with my current laptop. Finally I could record!
I’m kinda a perfectionist so I spent at least an hour after that practicing talking to the camera & typing up some notes. I’ve read the other entries, and I know that we all have something special to share with the world that you could help us with. So why should you choose me to work with in HBA?
What do I want to be known for? I’ve hesitated to answer this question for a long time because I thought that if I answered it, I’d turn people away from the work I was doing. Now I get it. Now I realize that the people I want to notice me WILL notice me if I am myself and don’t apologize for who I am and what I want to be known for. I simply want to be known as someone who will do anything she can to change the world. I want to be known as someone who uses her skills as a writer to reach out to others and uses the words of others to understand what goes on in people’s hearts.
I need Hot Brand Action right now because it’s time for me to step out in faith. World-changers need people to commit to the hurting hearts and screwed-up lives, and without support and guidance, those guides will fall away for easier, less heart-wrenching work.
I plan to change the world with my brand by showing them that it’s okay to feel small and scared. I want them to know it’s okay to be sassy and spiritual. It’s okay to be an introvert who listens more than talks. It’s okay to get guidance from classic rock that shapes who I am and what I do.

What do you want to be known for?
Making new moms feel like awesome superheroes, always being there when you need me, boosting confidence, being a total expert on babies, not making moms feel judged or guilty about ANYTHING.

My business is, and has always been, babies. My experience with marketing and branding before last year consisted of sitting around waiting for people to magically call me – which happened often enough to keep me from doing anything about it. But now I want to help LOTS of mamas and babies, and to do that, I need a clear message and some KICK ASS materials.
… Also, I tried to make a video and I can’t even tell you what a dismal failure it was. The phrase “reverse Frankenstein” was mentioned in regards to my hand positioning.

What do you want to be known for?
I want to be known for saving marriages, as a superhero for kids whose parents don’t get along. My passion is conflict – understanding it, resolving it and learning how it can make us better. My mission is to help families resolve their conflicts without destroying what they have, without regret and without fear.
Why do you need Hot Brand Action Right now?
Right now, there is a couple fighting and their children are afraid. Perhaps the kids are hiding in their rooms. Right now, a woman or man is resigned to file for divorce. Sometimes, a family is not meant to survive in its current form but SOMETIMES, the family needs HELP to hold things together. I can help them do just that. But, the reality is that what I offer – the skills and opportunity to face your conflicts head on – seems like the harder road. It’s not sexy and it’s not easy.
I need HBA because I need to create a brand that conveys the optimism, hope, empowerment and potential that I feel for a happy ending whenever I work with families in conflict. I know and feel these things in my bones but need to get them out into the light and into my brand identity.
How do you plan to change the world with your brand?
My brand will change the world. I will prevent at least one child from growing up listening to their parents scream at each other. I will give one child the opportunity to witness their parents communicating respectfully. I will help at least one child learn by example to be emotionally intelligent and to see conflict as an opportunity for resolution. I will do this by helping his/her parents be the role models they want to be. My brand will help at least one child live in peace and that child’s peaceful spirit will make the world a better place. I want to be known for living boldly and passionately as I teach women to discover and embrace who they were created to be through their creative talents.
