5 Ways to Deal with Compare and Despair Syndrome

February 21st, 2013

Tuesday was a very interesting day.

So here I am a 24 year old one woman show promoting my class at the same time as the well oiled machine that is B-school. I must be crazy, right? Well, for a while on Tuesday I did feel crazy. And I felt…. frustrated.. And a little sad.

I am very proud of my classes and I really believe that I offer something special to my students but  sometimes it just feels like climbing up a hill and  for some reason, the B-school hooplah got to me this time.

So here is the question:

What do you do when someone else is doing the same thing as you on a bigger scale? How do you keep doing what you do when it seems like other people are doing it better or at least seems like more people know about it?

I have since gotten over my b-school hang-ups and I think I have 5 ways to deal with it if it happens again:

1. Decide what you want more. Do you want to feel shitty or make your mark on the world?

First off, I realized that I didn’t really have a choice. What is stronger? My desire to watch someone else do things or my desire to help people in my own way? What do you want more?

This goes to my point about how entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. If your goal is to be famous or to be known and you don’t have a reason for it, you shouldn’t be here yo. We are here to make a difference, right?

So now that I KNOW my goal is to help people, I have no choice but to keep going forward because I love my work more than my ego.

2. Refine your strategic advantage / get clear about your “niche”

Obviously we all know that there are PLENTY of fish and the sea and one person can’t have ALL the clients but often times, we don’t think about it. What makes you different? What do you do that someone else can’t? Most people start businesses because they believe they have something truly unique and special to offer. What is it? Maybe you work with less people, maybe you know more about a weird version of what you are selling? Maybe you work with a specific audience.

I am convinced that defining a niche is really only good for this purpose. People who work with a very specific type of person struggle with this a lot less because they don’t have anyone to really compare themselves to and as a result do more and make more money.

So if you find that you struggle with this a lot, it might be time to start getting more specific about who you serve.
Think about your people as a whole, can you get even MORE specific? For example, if you do tech help, maybe you could focus on helping classes. If you do marketing or copywriting, maybe you can focus on product descriptions or kickstarter campaigns.

Also try to get OUT of your existing social circles. Can you bring your skills to an industry that doesn’t have anyone like you in it? Yoga for CEOS! Marketing for Vets!

3. Create something awesome

Most of the time we don’t necessarily want to BE the other person but there is something about their situation that we want for ourselves.

Best thing you can do?

Do something that gets you closer to that goal.

Maybe you admire the list-size/fame of a peer. Instead of whining about it google “list-building” in google and see what you come up with. Start writing a new book/freebie. Make the decision to hire a designer to help you rework your opt-in. Want more press? Check out a blog about PR. Buy a book.

Taking action always feels good and helps you forget about what you were even upset about.

It also helps us face the fact that sometimes we don’t even want to do what it takes to get the thing we might want.

4. UNPLUG

B-School is pretty inescapable but for the most part, it’s pretty easy to forget that you have any other competition. I unsubscribed to most of my blogs a while ago and only get a few and even those go into a special folder. I don’t get the jealousies very often because I am pretty ignorant to everything that is going on.

Control your environment so that you forget. Only keep the blogs that energize and inspire you. Do not read blogs JUST so you can compare yourselves to them.

5. Gratitude

I HAVE THE MOST AMAZING CLIENTS EVER. ALL CAPS. They are smart, compassionate and really nice people. When I indicated on facebook how I was feeling, I can’t tell you how many of them came to my aid and talked to me. I was reminded how lucky I am to be doing the work I am doing and that I am in the right place right now.

Think about your clients and the people (even if there are not many) that love you RIGHT NOW! How awesome is that?

The best way to deal with the fact that there is someone out there doing things bigger?

Go big for yourself.

Do your work and know that if you LOVE this, like really love this work — you don’t have a choice but to keep going.
How about you? Do you feel compare and despair syndrome? How do you deal with it?

Be Your Own Biz Strategist: A step-by-step guide

December 12th, 2012

I don’t believe in “the one and ONLY right way”, gurus, shoulds or “you gotta do this if you want to be successful.”

I believe in learning but ultimately trusting your own gut stuff to show you what you should do next. After working with 100 + women in my course, I am convinced that this is an essential ingredient to really making businesses happen.

Trust.

It’s really common business owners to trust other people more than they even trust themselves and this is really bad practice.

Advice is always good, but listen to yourself first.

But where do you even start?

I created a little step-by-step guide to crafting your own business strategy. It’s a simple go-to guide to helping you figure out when and WHY you should make changes, instead of just doing what you think might work.

Go through this process every time you feel like you want to change something and refer to these points when you see something done on someone else’s site and decide you need it too.

1. How do my people like to talk/communicate with me RIGHT NOW?

So, a lot of people assume that just because everyone does _______ then they have to do that too and it’s just not true. Every business has that one way that works for them and their audience. For me, email and facebook are my favorites. Are you hanging out with me over there? You should! :) I don’t do many webinars or teleseminars and I don’t many videos either because I feel like I make the most impact through my writing.

Now that you are own business strategist, look at your business and see (even if you have a list of 5 people) how can you focus in on creating more for your medium of choice.

Examples: sharing sneak peeks of your posts on facebook, sending love letters to email inboxes, creating a simple twitter chat, doing free 15 minute  coaching calls

2. Check in with your audience to see if they are resonating with where your business is going.

I like to call this an audience check. Post something on your chosen platform that is TOTALLY in-line with where your business is or where it is going and track the response. How do people react? A lot of times we start running our businesses and forget to make sure that our community even knows what is going on. We make all of these “strategic changes” for the wrong reasons.

Here is the reality:

If you don’t have the right people on your site, no amount of strategy/selling/website tweaks will help you.

If you hear crickets, you might need to think of some ways to engage your audience more in what you are doing/think of some ways to attract more of your right people. I’ll be writing more about this soon.

3. SURVEY your audience

You are in the service industry and as service providers, we gotta answer to our customers. The only way we can do that is by asking people what they want. As much as possible. You don’t have to design a long detailed survey. Asking open-ended questions does the trick too.

Example: What are you struggling with most when it comes to creating your own digital products?

4. Get focused feedback

Pick one of your favorite clients/followers that you KNOW gets you + Pick one person who doesn’t follow your work closely and ask them these questions about your site and copy:

Do you know what I do? Is it clear?
Is it clear how/why you should pay me?
Do you feel like you know where to go first?
Is it clear who my products and services are for?

I even created a little Choose Your Own Adventure Game to help you make sure your website experience is on-point.

Pick that up here.

After you get that information, make changes that will reflect what you resonate with from the feedback.

5. Make a list of your most viewed/appreciated content

What do people LOVE the most? How can you create more in the spirit of that blog post? This is a great way to find your sweet spot.  The best way to track this is by adding a simple “like” button to each post and just count and see what sticks.

6.  Know your essential numbers

I am totally guilty of this. We look at everyone else and what they are doing and forget to look at our own businesses to see how many clients we actually need.  Most of the time, what we THINK we need (as far as money, followers and the like) is way more than you actually need.

For example, if you are a coach who is slowly transitioning to doing this full time, ask yourself this:

How many coaching clients do you need per month to make the switch?

6. Create an engagement plan

How can you be in contact with your ideal customers every day? Maybe it’s a scheduled tweet/question that goes out every day? A photo of the day? A “post from the past” that gets tweeted everyday. Figure out simple ways to be in communication with your people.

So, let’s review your business strategy plan:

Stop doing that thing you don’t LOVE – A Mini Guide

December 5th, 2012

Last week was another anniversary for me. It has been exactly one year since I said “no” to my last potential copywriting and design client. I know I say this all the time but the moment I stopped doing all of the stuff I didn’t want to do was the moment I started making money.

Let me say that again. Highlight this in your brain, yo.

The moment I stopped doing all the stuff I didn’t want to do was the moment I started making money

So much of this industry is about service (which is totally true) but in reality you also have to know that we are being the MOST of service when we are doing the work that makes us the MOST happy.

Knowing this has TOTALLY changed my business and is the reason why I have a brand that goes through a lot of evolution.

Your happiness is an important measurement of your business success. If you are not happy, something needs to change.

Here is a mini-guide to help you stop doing that thing you don’t want to do anymore

1. Just stop

This is what I did. I put the line in the sand and said that’s it, yo. No more. I am not telling the universe that this is something I want to do anymore. I took the services off my site. I crafted a friendly no for people that asked me

and it was SCARY fo sho but here is the key thing:

I was MORE afraid of the idea of spending my life doing something I didn’t want to do.

This is something you gotta ask yourself. What is scarier? More of what you are doing now or the unknown?

Sometimes we just have wait till the idea of doing the same thing overwhelms us. That is the right moment.

Action step: Take that service off your page, stop mentioning it from this moment on

This takes a lot of trust because we have to know in our gut that while the world wants us to do something WE are really the ones that know best.

For a long time I was caught up in doing the things people wanted me to do and I was afraid to claim branding as the thing I really do. In fact, it wasn’t till this year that I really owned the title as a brander and not a copywriter or a designer.

My advice? Just stop and trust that the universe has your back and also know that you will survive.

I promise.

2. Start building your reputation as someone who wants to do the things you DO want to do

Decide who you want to be and just BE that person.

Once I decided that I wanted to do branding, I created a course that would help me do that in the way that works best for me. Offering a branding class is a really good way to tell people you are a branding expert, right?

And now, 10 months later I am known as a branding expert. No one gave me that title. I created it for myself.

Action Step: So, who do you want to be and what is a BOLD way for you to show the world that is who you want to be?

3. Save up

Give yourself a deadline, figure out how much money you need and give yourself at least a month to TRY and live your life without doing this thing. What opens up in your life? What changes? The key is to STICK TO IT. This only works for a specific type of personality. I am a HORRIBLE planner so I couldn’t do this but if you have a family and have a lot of commitments, this might be the right route for you.

It’s always nice to know that you have a way out and that you have a cushion, just in case.

Action Step: Pick your “done” month and figure out how much extra money you need to save to get out. At what point do you need to stop taking clients?

Remember you are worthy of doing the things you TRULY want to do. There will always be someone who is ready for you and what YOU do. You don’t have to turn down the volume or fit yourself in a box to have a successful business.

I once read a story about a guy who takes photos of candy. That’s his job. To photograph candy. It’s something that needs to be done and he is the one that does it!

Imagine the conversation he had with himself. I just REALLY want to take photos of candy. This is what I REALLY love.

You can do that too!

Would love to hear your thoughts. What do you want to stop doing? What is holding you back? What are you afraid of? Let’s chat about it!

August 7th, 2012

This is a preview bonus I am created for Hot Brand Action. This will actually be a video workshop for my class but here is a little teaser of some of the extra stuff you’ll learn in Hot Brand Action. So grab a sheet of paper and let’s do it!

I get a lot of complements on the little infographic on my homepage. It was really fun to make and super easy (design-wise) to create. I am currently preparing for the launch of the next (and final) Hot Brand Action course for the year and I am creating a graphic for the homepage. I thought I would take you through my process and teach you how I did mine and how you can make your own simple visual.

Why you should get a graphic on your homepage ASAP:

Infographics/Simple graphs are a simple, visual way to show information. It is especially great for our industry because most people don’t do them. Instead of seeing a huge wall of text, wouldn’t it be great to get the story in one look? We are visual people in a world of low attention spans, visual interest wins.

What you can use a simple visual for:

Simpify BIG concepts in less words
Example: How Marketing Works: A Visual

Help someone make a decision:
Example: which of my services is best for you?

Compare Ideas
Example: Ryan Gosling vs. Keanu Reeves

Show a process
Example: 1. Get Money 2. Get Paid 3. Get more money

Help your clients see yourself in your solution (ie: my homepage)
Example: This is how we work together

Ok, let’s decide on what you want to illustrate. Make sure it is simple and straight-forward.

I would suggest doing one to help people understand which of your services or products they should buy. Why not go straight to the money? Think about the tarket market for each one. How are they different?

Hint: if they are too similar, you PROBOBLY don’t need both. :)

For my graphic, my goal is to show potential students who the class is for and invite them to learn more about what the class can do for them. I also wanted them to go to another page to learn more.

With that in mind, I thought about how I could possibly show the info – I knew I wanted to do a flow chart because I wanted to have people take an active role in deciding if my class is for them or not.

I thought about my client and the different categories they fall in.

From there, I just played around with different ways to present the info. I went to visual.ly for some inspiration too. Remember, simplicity is KEY.

Here is my sketch (I am such a great artist)!

I would focus on simple shapes because that just makes life a LOT easier when you go in and design the whole thing.

Then I went in and started to think about what I wanted to say in each category. This is where you really need a lot of clarity in who you are and what you do. If you aren’t clear, most infographics end up being confusing.

For example, I know there are 3 types of people who will rock out HBA. For one category I wrote this:

  • You know you want to “write” or “coach” or some other awesome thing but have NO clue what to do next.
  • When people ask you what you do, you reply with “uhh”
  • You know you do good work but have no clue how to make sure people know it
  • You can’t find the confidence to put yourself out there so you don’t do much of anything (and you HATE that)

I wrote this based off of some hardcore knowledge about my target market and what they come to me to learn. In Hot Brand Action, we call this the Mob Boss Method.

What would your bullet points to say?
Do you have categories?

Next, I go into my favorite wireframing program and created another sketch to make sure it made sense on the screen. This is a great time to bring  in a web designer to pick up and help you brand it after this step.

Check it out (before I fill out the info) :

After that, I go into photoshop and create another sketch and add my branding and what-not.

I use photoshop but you could use any simple image editor. In fact, this is a free one that uses simple shapes with no problem. You can also go to http://piktochart.com  , they have templates you can use to create your fun little graphic.

Ok, this is the part where I would show you the finished product but I’m not gonna. :)

I know you are curious but my brand is a lady. We don’t show the goods until we are ready. If you want to be the first one to see it + get a bonus worksheet (coming soon) that will help you create your infographic, sign up!

Sign up, yo.

5 Reasons Why Your Business is STILL not making cash money

July 18th, 2012

So, you have a business. You work your butt off. You have read lots of books, gotten some of the best help available and invested in all the “right” things. But it just seems like things aren’t coming together. I totally get that. It can be frustrating. Hell, I’ve been there.   But I discovered something that has changed everything for me and I think it will change things for you too.  First, let’s answer the original question:

Why aren’t you making money yet? See if you identify with any of these scenarios.

1. You made investments that seemed right at the time but don’t actually work for you

Getting website and copy developed before you are ready isn’t just wasteful, it can also be harmful for your brand. I have encountered so many women who have spent money on branding only to find out that the result had NOTHING to do with what they wanted to do. It is REALLY tempting to put all of your eggs in one basket. Killer web design and beautifully written copy seems to be the golden ticket. If I get THAT right, everything will come together, right? Eh, not so much. There are many 7  figure businesses that have ugly websites and copy that is NOT sexy. And while having a clearly defined voice is important, it’s an evolution — not something that you can be given. It grows with you.

As long as you know who you are and what you are all about and can say it with some clarity, people will find you.

Quick solution: Run your brand as if you are fine with the site you have now. How would you connect with people? How can you make sure people get you without relying on your site? You would be surprised at  how  your business changes when you stop worrying about aesthetics and start focusing on the people.

2. You are stuck in the “watch and learn” loop.

You have taken lots of classes,  read plenty of books and invested in a few high level offerings. You are still stuck! You KNOW a lot but you have no idea how to implement what you have learned in a way that works for you and your brand. The more you learn, the more lost you get and you just feel like you need more information. In fact, you might have tried a lot of different strategies but none quite work yet.

Quick solution: Go on a “learning” strike and only spend your time and money on experiences with concrete, actionable results. Hire a freelance project manager and get some plans on the books.

3. You created offerings that no one wants

It is so tempting to go into your science lab, create a product or service and work on it in secret before releasing it to the wild. Here is the problem with that: you might create something no one wants. Remember your brand is NOT about you. It’s about the people you serve and it is super self-serving to create things that people don’t want. We have all been guilty of this? We think of something really cool that we think everyone needs and we don’t test it out first.

Quick solution: Make sure that talking to YOUR people is a huge part of your process. Blogging does NOT count. Get in the habit of talking to people in a way that gives them the chance to talk back.

Bonus: You are selling/offering the stuff you think you “should”

Just stop it. Stop it. This is YOUR business. You have no business selling anything that you don’t want because you think it will be more profitable. Sure, you might be successful (I know this from experience) but it will eat away at you and your work will start to suffer. Trust me, I know.

Quick solution: take down those offerings

4. You are a GOLDDIGGER.

Remember my post on that? If not, click here. People ONLY hear from you when you have something to sell. In fact, you only provide value when you are selling. Ugh. This is one of my pet peeves. It is BAD karma and it makes each service progressively harder to sell.

Quick solution: Make your business consistently engaging so people ALWAYS want to buy from you, not just when you are launching something big. Do things that matter.

5. You don’t do anything

You built it and expect the people to just come. Noooo. This drives me crazy too. Like I said before, your website isn’t your business, YOU ARE YOUR BUSINESS. It is up to you to sell your products, get out there and start talking to people and making money. You have to find a way to consistently promote your products, create value and be of service at every turn. That doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. Find out what that means for you.And if you are doing something that does NOT work, time to try something else.

Quick solution: create a plan. Write a post once a week, plan a monthly webinar or pick a set of times that you WILL be on facebook — just start! :)

Can you see the common thread between everything I listed there? It’s all about brand engagement. This is the secret weapon of my brand (and many others). It is the one thing you can do to make sales without “launching” or having thousands of followers. Hot Brand Action has never had a major launch. Ever. And the class STILL sells out. On a baby-sized list (that I love). I must be a broken record right now but I really want you to start doing this. I really want businesses to stop thinking that their business success is soley based on how many people they have on their lists or the sexiness of their websites.  I am TOTALLY passionate about this because it has made ALL the difference for me.

Your list and social media following are not measuring sticks  you should use to determine your worth or profitability potential.

I discovered that helping other businesses do this is the perfect evolution of the work I do in HBA so I have created a fresh new offering (that I have been doing on the down low for months) that I want you to check out. I am REALLY excited about it.

The goal? To help you create a undeniably mind-blowing, awe-inspiring kick ass brand.  In 1 afternoon.

Check out some facebook praise from one of my recent clients:

Click the image to check it out! And I created  a video, ya’ll:

Does this post give you any ideas of what to do differently? Are you guilty of any of these?

How to talk about what you do (even if you don’t know yet)

July 10th, 2012

First off, I wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who reads this blog. Honestly, I didn’t know. I am not a anaylitics person and comments aren’t super common on my blog so I had no idea how many of you were actually reading. I actually got the opprotunity to meet 50ish of you this weekend at WDS. I literally went back to my airbnb and cried because I was so taken aback by hearing all of the great stories about what you have learned and what this blog has helped you accomplished. SO MUCH love to you. I do what I do because I am obsessed with my work and I am glad that it’s getting out there.

Ok, back to regularly scheduled programing.

So, I am going to give you my fool-proof trick for introducing yourself to people, EVEN if you don’t have a fancy cocktail line yet. Take some notes, my friend.

As we know, that dreaded question: “What do you do?” is difficult when you don’t have clarity about it yet ( oh, there is a class for that, yo).  We don’t always have the luxury of being clear when we meet new people and we can’t always wait for it either. Sometimes we just gotta get out there and find it.

This little method is SO easy that you won’ t even believe it.

Ready?

Ask them what THEY do first.

So, for example: you are at a networking event with other small businesses and you meet Jane. Jane says she owns a house cleaning service for residential buildings.

Let’s pretend you work with women who are going through big transitions in their lives. ( A litle vague but we aren’t crystal clear yet, right?)

Once she tells you what she does, you use that information to introduce yourself. Instead of telling her what you do, you’ll show her.

Example of what you could say:

“Ok, say that your business is going really well but you are REALLY ready to make the transition to big office complexes. I would help you first get your mindset right for this big leap AND give you the tools and resources you need to get there.

BOOM. Jane totally gets that! It’s about HER, after all!

Jane will be so freakin’ impressed that she will ask to learn more and a conversation that might have been open and shut becomes a potential sale. That’s networking.

Why this works:

People LOVE to talk about themselves and if you let them go first, you’ll be able to use what other info they get as material for your introduction.

Not only are you telling them what you do but you are also giving them information about how you can help them. This is ALSO a great tool for getting clarity. 10 minute conversations with people are a great way to truly KNOW what your people need and why. Follow up by asking questions about what they do.

You are also giving yourself the opportunity to work beyond the typical cocktail line and really talk about what you do in a more meaningful way. It’s all about service.

Try to go to network events where you KNOW you will meet potential clients. That makes this method even MORE effective.

Try it with me for practice:

Hi. I’m Shenee and I am a brand engagement expert. I help entrepreneurs build unforgettable brands online through classes and 1-on-1 work.

Now, what do you do? How could you help me?

And don’t forget, I released my first e-book. Check it out here.

June 26th, 2012

In my new book, I write a short section about the strategy behind subject lines in emails. Yes, there are so many different things we COULD do to make our subject lines convert better, but is that something we really want to spend a lot of time on? Is that something that deserves lots of attention?

There are so many rules. SO many things that could help us convert more, sell more and do better. It’s so tempting to do it all and hope for at least some of the results.

But if we spend all of our time “improving” where does that leave us? Do we spend entire afternoons endlessly tweaking our copy or optimizing blog posts?

There are blogs devoted to giving us advice that will make us better but what advice should we actually follow?

First off, let me say this:

If we devote our time to running our business and being of service to the world, we don’t have to rely so much on advice, tactics or strategies to get us further faster. The work speaks for itself.

I repeat: The work speaks for itself.

So, are you working?

There is nothing worse than the overwhelm that comes from taking a class and not being able to keep track of everything you are doing (and learning). I am taking b-school right now and I am having trouble keeping track with the things I wanna do as a result of the work I am doing. I am great about taking notes but a lot of the times,  I can’t find what I need in my notebook. Here are some resources I found (and use to help me) take care of this problem.

6 Ways to Stop Idolizing _______and start loving YOUR business

June 4th, 2012

I talk about this a lot but I have never given you ways that you can start doing this right now. Sure “stop idolizing and do your work” is great in theory but how does it actually work? What does it look like? I am great at this but it didn’t happen overnight. I still have moments when I struggle with too. It is my hope that these tips will help whenever you are spending too much time on someone ease’s site, trying to figure out why THEY can do it and you can’t.

1. Talk it out

What do you love so much about what that person is doing? What are they doing that you aren’t doing yet and how can you define your own version of what this looks like for you? Do you need to hire someone? Need to stop doing something? It is always a great idea to pay attention to what you like in others and why.

Our jealousies (and obsessive idolizing) are often the hopes and dreams we are afraid to pursue on our own.

2. Treat Yo Self

Most likely, you have done something awesome. Make sure you have acknowledged it. Create rituals around your achievement. Landed a client? Buy yourself a new notebook and some fresh pens. Put on your first webinar and loved it? Invest in a paid webinar software. Make it through a tough day? Get some frozen yogurt. When we recognize our achievements, we propel ourselves forward and have less time to think about what everyone else is doing.

3.  Spend some time thinking about that dream project and start creating a plan

Want to write a book someday? Spend an hour writing your outline. Want to put on a class? Start figuring out what you hope to start teaching people. This is the quickest way to get rid of a case of the jealousies. Spend some time rockin’ your own business and preaching the gospel of your own unique (and awesome) point-of-view. Really get into it and somewhere along the way, you’ll forget that you were obsessing over someone else and you’ll be excited about what you have to say

Spend time with your hopes and dreams and the love will start flowing.
