5 Reasons Why Your Business is STILL not making cash money
So, you have a business. You work your butt off. You have read lots of books, gotten some of the best help available and invested in all the “right” things. But it just seems like things aren’t coming together. I totally get that. It can be frustrating. Hell, I’ve been there. But I discovered something that has changed everything for me and I think it will change things for you too. First, let’s answer the original question:
Why aren’t you making money yet? See if you identify with any of these scenarios.
1. You made investments that seemed right at the time but don’t actually work for you
Getting website and copy developed before you are ready isn’t just wasteful, it can also be harmful for your brand. I have encountered so many women who have spent money on branding only to find out that the result had NOTHING to do with what they wanted to do. It is REALLY tempting to put all of your eggs in one basket. Killer web design and beautifully written copy seems to be the golden ticket. If I get THAT right, everything will come together, right? Eh, not so much. There are many 7 figure businesses that have ugly websites and copy that is NOT sexy. And while having a clearly defined voice is important, it’s an evolution — not something that you can be given. It grows with you.
As long as you know who you are and what you are all about and can say it with some clarity, people will find you.
Quick solution: Run your brand as if you are fine with the site you have now. How would you connect with people? How can you make sure people get you without relying on your site? You would be surprised at how your business changes when you stop worrying about aesthetics and start focusing on the people.
2. You are stuck in the “watch and learn” loop.
You have taken lots of classes, read plenty of books and invested in a few high level offerings. You are still stuck! You KNOW a lot but you have no idea how to implement what you have learned in a way that works for you and your brand. The more you learn, the more lost you get and you just feel like you need more information. In fact, you might have tried a lot of different strategies but none quite work yet.
Quick solution: Go on a “learning” strike and only spend your time and money on experiences with concrete, actionable results. Hire a freelance project manager and get some plans on the books.
3. You created offerings that no one wants
It is so tempting to go into your science lab, create a product or service and work on it in secret before releasing it to the wild. Here is the problem with that: you might create something no one wants. Remember your brand is NOT about you. It’s about the people you serve and it is super self-serving to create things that people don’t want. We have all been guilty of this? We think of something really cool that we think everyone needs and we don’t test it out first.
Quick solution: Make sure that talking to YOUR people is a huge part of your process. Blogging does NOT count. Get in the habit of talking to people in a way that gives them the chance to talk back.
Bonus: You are selling/offering the stuff you think you “should”
Just stop it. Stop it. This is YOUR business. You have no business selling anything that you don’t want because you think it will be more profitable. Sure, you might be successful (I know this from experience) but it will eat away at you and your work will start to suffer. Trust me, I know.
Quick solution: take down those offerings
4. You are a GOLDDIGGER.
Remember my post on that? If not, click here. People ONLY hear from you when you have something to sell. In fact, you only provide value when you are selling. Ugh. This is one of my pet peeves. It is BAD karma and it makes each service progressively harder to sell.
Quick solution: Make your business consistently engaging so people ALWAYS want to buy from you, not just when you are launching something big. Do things that matter.
5. You don’t do anything
You built it and expect the people to just come. Noooo. This drives me crazy too. Like I said before, your website isn’t your business, YOU ARE YOUR BUSINESS. It is up to you to sell your products, get out there and start talking to people and making money. You have to find a way to consistently promote your products, create value and be of service at every turn. That doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. Find out what that means for you.And if you are doing something that does NOT work, time to try something else.
Quick solution: create a plan. Write a post once a week, plan a monthly webinar or pick a set of times that you WILL be on facebook — just start!
Can you see the common thread between everything I listed there? It’s all about brand engagement. This is the secret weapon of my brand (and many others). It is the one thing you can do to make sales without “launching” or having thousands of followers. Hot Brand Action has never had a major launch. Ever. And the class STILL sells out. On a baby-sized list (that I love). I must be a broken record right now but I really want you to start doing this. I really want businesses to stop thinking that their business success is soley based on how many people they have on their lists or the sexiness of their websites. I am TOTALLY passionate about this because it has made ALL the difference for me.
Your list and social media following are not measuring sticks you should use to determine your worth or profitability potential.
I discovered that helping other businesses do this is the perfect evolution of the work I do in HBA so I have created a fresh new offering (that I have been doing on the down low for months) that I want you to check out. I am REALLY excited about it.
The goal? To help you create a undeniably mind-blowing, awe-inspiring kick ass brand. In 1 afternoon.
